PEGGY AHWESH: SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME

Workshop by Peggy AHWESH

We are surveilled in multiple situations daily and have come to accept it, ignore it, or do what we can to maintain some sense of privacy and agency. Surveillance technology fights our wars and controls the lives of our populations, especially minority and poor people. This workshop will give a brief overview of the history of surveillance and highlight artists’ creative repurposing of it. We will discuss several Lo-Fi consumer image systems such as heat sensitive cameras, baby video monitors, drones and spy cams.

Peggy Ahwesh is a famous American video artist. In the 80’s she started her career making feminist punk and amateur super 8 films. She is known for her use of a range of different technologies, methods and aesthetics. Her work has been extensively shown at Centre Pompidou, MOMA, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum of American Art, Anthology Film Archives, New York Film Festival and now also at Het Bos in Antwerp and Cinematek in Brussels.
